Scam texts and emails pretending to be from delivery companies, banks, Revenue and phone networks are now a daily problem in Ireland. They are designed to look real. These warning signs will help you spot them.

Warning signs

  • It creates urgency: your account will be closed, a parcel will be returned, a fine is due
  • It asks you to click a link to pay a small fee or confirm details
  • The link does not match the company's real website
  • It asks for card details, a PIN or a one-time code
  • It comes from a mobile number or an odd email address

What real companies do

Banks will never ask for your full PIN or a one-time code by text, email or phone. If you are unsure, do not use the link or number in the message. Open the company's app, or type their website address yourself, and check there.

If you clicked a link

  • If you entered bank details, call your bank immediately using the number on your card
  • Change the password for any account you logged into, and turn on two-step verification
  • Run a security scan on your device
  • Report the message to An Garda Síochána if you lost money

If your computer is acting strangely after clicking a link or installing something, stop using it for banking and bring it to Tech Depot. We check it, remove anything harmful and secure your accounts, in store or by remote support.
